Just saw your post about staying in Gary.
Actually the problem with Gary is that there isn't anything to do there.
But you're not far from Chicago, so that gives you a ton of options.
As for staying, hop on I-65 east of the ballpark and zoom south to the Radisson in Merrillville.
If you don't go there or would rather just rack in economy, there are a lot of cheapo motels around I-65/U.S. 30.
You won't find suitable lodging near the ballpark, though off the Toll Road, I think there is a hotel in Hammond, which would be west of Gary.

As for safety, the city generally is less dangerous than unpredictable. There are some rather dark and under managed areas of town where you could lose a wheel in a pothole. Some places at night, cops wonder why out of town people are poking around. It's a fair question.

If you'd rather stay in Chicago, you can make it down to Jackson/Michigan to the Metra station and take the South Shore commuter train to the ball park. I don't know if it schedules well with the games or not and there is a "last train" at night that you'd need to be aware of, but most games would not end that late. (Michigan Ave. in Chicago is a tourist attraction all on its own.)

Kennethap, who posts here, may well have better input than I do on this.
